Charles Thomas "Chip" Black, of Rockford departed this earthly life September 28, 2023. He was born July 24, 1953 in Rockford, IL the son of Charlie and Estelle Black. Charles married the former Scharnae Carter, August 6, 1977 of this union six children were raised. Charles served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was employed as a sales associate for Napelton Auto Werks. He was a member of Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, formerly serving in the Male Chorus and on the Kitchen Committee. He was a former member of Israel of God WHA where he served as a deacon.  Charles was a coach for many years, coaching football at Booker Washington and Northwest Community Centers, also women's softball for the Eldorado Club.  Charles graduated from West High School class of 1971, participating in football, after receiving a football scholarship he attended the University of Illinois.

Charles leaves to cherish many loving memories, his son, Michael Harris; five daughters, Sara Torrence,  LaTosha (Lee) Price, Valerie Black, Tracie (Larnell, III.) Malone and Carmen Williams; 15 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; mother, Estelle Black; two sisters, DeVonne Black and Lisa Caldwell; brother Jeffrey Black; a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Charlie Black; maternal grandparents, Thomas and Esther Elmore; and paternal grandparents, Theodies Black Sr. and Fannie Mae White-Black.

Services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church 3000 Rural Street. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. Arrangements completed by Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home Inc. 200 N. Johnston Ave.
