Joyce Elaine Vaughn was born in Rockford, IL on April 10, 1949 to her mother, Annie Mae Tatum and her father, H. Turner.  Joyce attended elementary and middle school in Rockford and graduated from West High School in 1967.  After high school Joyce attended nursing school at Rock Valley College and received her LPN certificate, which she used for decades giving service to the sick and disabled.  During this time, Joyce was married and had 4 children.

After the passing of her mother in 1991, Joyce decided to make a change in her life, and in 1993 she moved to Memphis, TN, where she continued her loving and caring service as a nurse and professional caretaker In Memphis.  While in Memphis,  Joyce decided to attend Southwest Tennessee Community College,  where she received her RN license. .Joyce began her own private nursing and caretaking business, and she continued this service in the Memphis Metro Area for more than 25 years. In 2008 Joyce met Jerry Scurlock, and they were married and remained married until her death.

Joyce was the defender of those who could not care for themselves and was always the  one who would give love and encouragement unconditionally to everyone she came in contact with.

Joyce was preceded in death by her mother and father, and her paternal and maternal grandfather and grandmother.

She leaves to continue her legacy of love and service- her husband Ret. T-Sgt Jerry Scurlock USAF ; her 4 children Kevin Elliott, Lisa Elliott, Wm Prince Vaughn III, and Michael Vaughn and daughter- in-law Gabriel Vaughn; sister-in-law Wanda E. Vaughn; nieces and nephew Shatarra Falls, Tia Falls, Anthony Falls II;  3 grandchildren – Gabriel Taylor , Mathew Vaughn ( Michelle  Peters) and  Klarke Vaughn (Kim Collier); and a host of family and friends.

Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at Providence Baptist Church 2209 Clifton Ave. Burial in Cedar Bluff Cemetery. Visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. Arrangements completed by Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home Inc. 200 N. Johnston Ave.
