Obituary

Michael Leon Bell, 74, was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, and United States Air Force veteran whose life was marked by service, a love of family, and a generous heart.

Michael graduated from West High School in 1971, where he played both football and basketball. His years in school helped shape the man he would become, carrying with him a spirit of determination, camaraderie, and connection with others. A little-known fact about Michael was that he was a talented sketch artist with some of his pieces being published.

During the Vietnam War era, Michael served in the United States Air Force, dedicating a portion of his life to military service. Following his time in the military, he continued serving others through his work with the Veterans Administration, where he assisted with recruitment. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his professional responsibilities and into every aspect of his life.

Michael had a love for traveling and exploring new places. He spent time in several countries and traveled extensively throughout the United States. However, some of his most cherished journeys were the trips he made from state to state to visit family. Many times, you could find Michael behind the wheel of his car, making his way across the country to spend time with the people he loved. For Michael, the miles were worth traveling if they brought him closer to family.

Michael leaves to cherish his memory his three children, Michael Jr., Sherron, and Nekesha Bell; his sisters, Robin Bell-Washington, Dauphne (Marion) Sims, and Candance Bell-Pittman; and his brother, Peter (Mary) Bell, Woodstock, IL; Aunts Bessie Bell-Williams Houston, Texas and Murphalene Bell; One Uncle Charles (Linda) Joseph. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Vanessa, Stephanie, Marcus, and Mia Bell; Denzel and Zyla Castanon; eleven great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews as well as extended family members, and many friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Melva Bell; Brothers Olen and Bruce Bell; Sister Pamela Jackson.

Above all, Michael will be remembered for his big heart. He was a man who was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His generosity, kindness, and willingness to show up for others were among his most admirable qualities. He gave freely of himself, and his presence touched the lives of those who knew him.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m.  Friday, November 13, 2026 at Carl E. Ponds Funeral Home Inc. 200 N. Johnston Ave. Burial in Cedar Bluff Cemetery.  Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
